Day Six--Redemption
July 14, 2002
Game 6
Pam Wrote:
Well while you guys were all sleeping soundly, we'all were up & at the rink for our 8:00 game against Great Britain. Everyone had a hard time sleeping after all the excitement from last night. The boys tossed & turned....and I know myself & some of the other parents couldn't go to sleep right away either....(midnight-1:00am) only to have to wake up at 6:30. So everyone was tired this morning.
We started off good however, Derek scored on a pass from Shawn...and we held them at-bay for most of the first
period until we got into penalty trouble & they scored 2 points.
Then Derek again scored on an assist from Dustyn and we tied it up. The guys started looking a little fatigued and the GB's scored 2 more
goals. We parents did not want to hear that dreaded melody again. (Ask your boys to sing it for you when they get home)
Then we got a power play and Joe scored a goal.......and not a little bit later, catching second wind, Joe scored again on a tight pass from Dustyn. We were tied. At this point we began to annoy the GB fans. We were yelling & whistling & yahooing. Then on what can only be best described as awesome teamwork, Elliot set up a pass to Joe...who passed it to Shawn for the winning goal. If that wasn't enough, GB pulled their goalie in the last minute enabling Derek to complete his Hat Trick on a sweet pass from Shawn!! We won 6-4!!
At the end, the boys all congratulated each other & even GB was happy for us.
So we end this sojourn on a happy note. Winning our last game, Tying the #1 team and just feeling good about themselves. Many of the boys will leave today. We have closing ceremonies at 4:00. The boys will then be off for a LaCrosse Game this evening....leaving us parents to our own
devices. There's a Molson draft somewhere with our names on it. Thanks Stan. We'll save the receipt for ya----eh?
Signing off from Toronto. Trust we'll see ya's back in town.

Day Five--Two Games
July 13, 2002
Game 4 (1 of 2 today; Game 5 below)
Pam Wrote:
Well take a picture from yesterday....and put a different day on it--and
that's what today's first game against Germany was...only far more exciting.
We started out dominating Germany and were ahead 3-1 at one point. Brandon scored on a excellent pass from Derek, then Matt (aka Jonas) scored an unassisted breakaway...(totally deeked the goalie) then Brandon scored again on a pass from Joe who had just won a face-off.
Then things kinda fell apart. We were plagued by a number of penalties (this was the worse called game thus far) and got shorted a goal by Dennis (though we
haven't reviewed the film yet...but we are pretty sure it was topshelf-inside bar) and the darn power plays allowed Germany to come back. Pat had his best game so far in net...keeping them in the game. He faced 41 shots..too many power plays....and only allowed 4 goals (their fifth was empty net)....final score 5-3. Germany was a much tougher team, and the boys played really well, just didn't have the focus to hold on till the end.
(These games also have "stop time" which means even though they are 2-15 minute periods, they stop the clock every play stoppage. Today it was a huge disadvantage for us.) We are resting up to play Ontario at 8pm tonight....and they are the odds-on
favorite to win this age division.
No more trips or excursions are planned. Most are leaving tomorrow. We will have one more game tomorrow morning 9am against Great Britain again....our last chance unless we score an upset against Ontario. The boys will be hungry to win that one. Anything to keep them (GB) from singing that song....(I think its their National song...but not God Save the Queen--it will give these boys nightmares for years to come tho).
Game 5 vs Ontario All stars
Well we played the #1 Team- Ontario..the home team...These guys spanked the Western Canada Team...the same team that spanked us on Monday. We went out there with nothing to lose. As expected, the
Canadians jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first minutes of the game. We in the stands kinda held our collective breaths....hoping things would not go too bad, or that the boys wouldn't lose their cool. Then out of nowhere we watch as Derek sacrificed his body, enabling Dennis to skate ahead & find an open AJ......GGGGOOOOAAAALLLL. OMG we scored a goal against Ontario. To good to be true. We were hootin' & hollerin'. Defense was phenomenal, we were checking guys...not letting them pass & Pat was not letting anything by.
(He faced 36 shots) We got a power play and before we realized Joe scored a goal on a pass from Elliot. At the end of the first period we were tied 2-2 with the #1 team in our division...tied!. Guys---these were not boys they were playing. None of them wore face cages...some even had receding hairlines....they were born with skates on their feet. Each play they made was a set up play...trouble is those
pesky Saxons kept tying them up & they just couldn't get their shots to go in. As we got into the second period the boys started to drag
a little & Ontario scored two more goals. As the clock started to tick down to less than two minutes, we started to think..."losing 4-2 against the #1 team is not so bad".....the boys got their second wind. Dustyn worked the puck in & passed to Tim for our 3rd goal with 1:26 seconds to go. The score was 4-3. Here we go again. Coach pulled the goalie just as he did in the last 3 games....and we were all holding our breaths as we
thought we were headed for another 5-3 game. We couldn't have been more wrong. Immediately after the face off, Dennis passed a beauty to Shawn & tied the game!!!! Yes folks WE TIED with the best team!! 4-4. Game over. It truly was as good as a win. It was pandemonium!!
How good are they.....well lets see:
1. No other team has held them to 4 points. The West Canadians lost to them 7-4. That is also the smallest goal differential.
2. Patty came in to personally congratulate each boy --she was so happy since the Ontario Coach had been bragging/complaining earlier that his team was going into the playoffs undefeated! She
was so glad the boys shut them up.
3. This Ontario team is not just a tournament team from Ontario....this is the ALL STARS from various tournament teams in Ontario.
So that's it..our big highlight. The boys are really pumped & can't wait to take on Great Britain tomorrow morning.
The boys new chant before the game....Ziggie Zoggy Ziggie Zoggy , OI, OI, OI - U.S.A.
It seems to work.
Good Night from Toronto, eh?... |

Game Four

Game
Five

This is Patty (From Mission)'s account of the game against Ontario:
Sacramento vs Ontario
– 18 & Under
One of the most heartfelt games was displayed Saturday, when the
Sacramento Saxons played the undefeated Ontario team, in their final game
of the round robin play. With the Saxons winning only (1) game up to this
point, they stepped up to the plate to proudly play the #1 seeded team.
Scoring was as follows:
Ontario scores at 13:12, then again at 7:58.
Sacramento scores at 7:34 with a goal by Derek Wichman, assisted by Matt
Duncan.
Sacramento adds another goal 50 seconds later with an assist by Elliot
Jones, to Joe Garcia.
Second period, Ontario scores at 12:46, and again at 7:45.
Score is now 4-2, in favor of Ontario.
Sacramento answers back at 2:49 with a goal by Tim Kessner.
With 21 seconds left in the game, Sean Rafferty taps in the 4th goal from
the Saxons to tie the game!
The excitement at the end of the game was overwhelming for the Saxons, as
they had just TIED the number one seeded team in the 18 & under
division...As I entered the locker room for a post-game chat with the
boys, they were ecstatic! In their minds, they felt they had just won the
Gold Medal! Nothing will ever take away the pride and excitement that this
team felt at that very moment. Saxons…. You made me proud!

Day Four--The Hockey Hall of Fame
July 12, 2002

Pam Wrote:
Well Day 4 we found ourselves heading off this morning for Toronto
& road the subway to the Hockey Hall of Fame. It had a lot of memorabilia,
the first "real" Stanley Cup and a really nice tribute &
section dedicated to Wayne Gretzky. The boys seemed to like it --although I
think we all had different expectations. We did get a picture of the
whole team in front of the Stanley Cup (replica).
We later headed off for our 7:00 game against Great Britain. We were
in control and lead in the first period, but GB tied it up on a 2-man
advantage power play in the second, and later scored an empty netter with a minute left in the game...5-3 was the final. Goals were scored by
Shawn, Dustyn & Brandon, with Tim & Elliot getting assists.
Tomorrow we
face Germany at 2:00 and Ontario at 7:00.
Later was the All Star "Ambassador Game" which was an East
vs
West. The East was Great Britain, Ontario & Germany. The West was
Australia, West Canada & US. Representing the US were Joe, Dustyn,
Brandon & AJ. The boys played together as line the entire game (as
opposed to mixing up lines with other countries) & did well. The West
won...6-4.
Tomorrow we will do nothing but rest up for the games ahead. This mom
is getting a head start on the rest right now.

Day Three--The Boys Meet Gretzky's Dad
July 11, 2002
Morning games are not the most successful, historically, for
the Saxons. But today's game, scheduled for 10:00AM got off to a
great start....well it was actually before the game. The boys got to
meet Wayne Gretzky's dad. He told them stories and posed for
pictures. They were really impressed. Here's the picture:
Pam Wrote:
Day three---What a day. Here it is 10:15 pm...the sun set about a half
hour ago...(that is weird) and it got to 24 degrees today. It was beautiful... just a slight wind, clear skies. Really nice.
The boys are still jet lagging...and it was evident this morning. It
took too long for them to get their groove, and by then it was too late.
We lost a hard fought game tho against Australia 5-3. Brandon scored
the first on his infamous slap from the point. Tim scored a nice goal
on a great pass from (either Shawn or Dustyn) and Dennis scored a short
handed goal....again worth 2 in my book. Pat faced 38 shots...and unfortunately a few of the goals against were because we were in penalty. I must say tho that the reffing thus far is the best we've
seen in tourney play. The game truly could have gone either way...we just had a few misfires on some great plays. Tomorrow we face Great
Britain.
Before the game the boys (our boys recognized him & were the only ones
around) were treated with a 20 minute session with Walter Gretzky...the
Great One's dad. They were all so enthralled and listened so intensely
to every word out of his mouth. It was great! He is an awesome man and
boy did he have some stories. He loves to tell stories. Patty came by
& took a pix of the boys with him and said she'd post it on the
TopCat website, but haven't seen it yet. www.topcathockey.com.
Don't panic
when you see the pix, the first one she took, not all of our boys were there......but eventually they were and I (hopefully) got a pix of the
entire team with him.
After the game we kinda made the boys go to Niagra Falls with us. They
were hesitant... wanted to just hang out. But once we could get a couple
of them to agree to go, of course they all wanted to. We told them this
is a once in a lifetime opportunity (well Joe & Tim have been before)
and
when we got there, I think they all were just amazed at the site. We
spent a couple of hours there, the boys pigged out on ice cream & we
headed back. In our van--B&P, Shawn, Dennis & AJ were fast asleep
before we made it to the highway. I think the same was true for Van
2--the Duncans. (It has been so great...we all have the same vans, diff colors) The Joneses didn't go cuz they will be going Mon & Tues, so
they went to the CN tower....as did the Raftery's (minus Shawn)....but
they didn't' know each other went.
So on to Day 4. We plan to do Hall of Fame tomorrow morning then come
back & rest up before the game.

Day Two--Jet Lag Still a Factor
July 10, 2002
| With a lot of anticipation and patriotic rooters, the boys
took to the surface unsure about what they were up against. The
Western Canada team, their first opponent, emerged from the locker room
without full-face cages. In other words, all team members were at
least 18 years old. Our fears were confirmed when Canada scored
their first goal during the first shift of the game. It was obvious
that these boys had been together a long time, striking with pinpoint
passes and precision plays.
Team USA had its bright moments. Dustyn scored a goal in the
first period and again late in the second, for our only two goals.
There were other scoring chances that fell just short or wide, so there is
no cause for panic just yet. Pat faced 48 shots. We don't know
the exact the score, since it doesn't register when the point differential
is more than 5. 0ur best guess is they scored 12. Still, he
had a better save percentage than the West Canadian's goalie.
It looked to me like the boys were still a little tired. The
other teams have been here a week already, playing in the Can-Am Cup, a
sort of tune-up tournament for the Global Games.
Thoughts of today's loss will be placed on the backburner tonight as
the boys attend a "Global Games" function. The guys will
join their Australian, British, German, and Canadian counterparts in an
evening of race car driving, rock climbing, arcades, virtual hang
gliding and more at Mississauga's Playdium Amusement Park.
More latter, eh? |

Day of the Zombie Saxons
July 9, 2002
We made it to Toronto, not without incident, but all in one piece.
Coach Ric had a practice today and the men looked good, even though most of
them had been up all night trying to get here. There will be more news,
but for now, we are going to get a good night's sleep and have our first game
Wednesday against West Canada. Here are some quick photos. Some
are dark due to the limitations of my camera. My digital camera broke on
day 2, so I had to take 35mm shots, get them developed and take the prints to
KINKO's to scan them in, hence the delay in getting them posted here. Mark
