Woodland
Beats Davis in the Finals 6-4
Pictures

This was an example of a team that just didn't quit. Down 2-0 in the first period, our defense stiffened and we kept chipping away at the lead, finally going ahead mid-way in the third period and putting it away with another quick goal with about 5 minutes to go. Moises had 4 goals to lead the offense with one each from Miranda and Spencer. Unfortunately I don't know who provided the assists. However, it was the hard charging defense that turned things around, with a great performance by Stewart in goal. This truly was a team effort. All the good things that happened involved the whole team scrapping for every puck and refusing to let them get into a rhythm.
This was a great way to end the run for the senior players. Justin, Adam and Stewart will be a good core group for next year.
I'd like to thank Joy Raftery and Andy Gagnon for coaching and Linda McGrew and Maggie Henderson for help with the organization. Most importantly, the players were a joy to be around. They approached the season with pride and a close camaraderie that made it fun and rewarding.
Thanks for a great season,
Mark |

Perfect Season

December
12, 2003. Woodland High School Students eagerly awaited
their opponent in this weeks championship game at the Davis Inline Skate
Center. To no one’s surprise, only the Davis High School Blue Devils
stood between them and a perfect 12-0 season Sunday afternoon at the Davis
Inline Skate Center. Previous games between these two teams were all
decided in the closing minutes and the large contingent of spectators knew
they were in for a nail biting experience.
Once again Davis speedster Ivan Torres propelled a
slap shot under players struggling for position to put his Blue Devils on
top at 8:17 mark of the first period. Woodland countered a minute later
when David Morrison broke free to hit a hard slap shot from the corner
that tied the game.
Woodland players then dug a whole for themselves
when penalties became a factor. Davis capitalized and scored on a Richard
Newens to Steve Lindley pass play to take a 2-1 lead. Coaches credited the
stepped up play during penalty situations by Captain Shawn Raftery, Asst
Captain Ken Martinez, Casey Gagnon, Spencer Jones, Michael Witham, Markus
Preciado and Goalie Craig Martinez for stopping numerous other scoring
drives. With just 43 seconds left to play in the second period, Woodland
defenseman Casey Gagnon overpowered the Davis offense to break up a play
and lead a break out with Manuel Abarca. Gagnon scored on a nifty backhand
shot to tie the score.
Fifteen minutes to put everything on the line was
what Coach Mark Jones asked for and Woodland players responded. Again it
was Moises Abarca who took charge and knew the Davis defense would smother
his attempts to score. When he made a last second pass across the rink to
the fast breaking Gagnon the goalie was unable to stop the quick one timer
on his backside giving Woodland it’s first lead at the 13:45 minute
mark.
Another Woodland penalty nearly caused their
downfall but repeated stops by goalie Craig Martinez motivated his
teammates. Every scoring drive by both teams was met with maximum
resistance until the closing seconds of the game. Davis pulled their
goalie in a valiant attempt to tie the score but Captain Raftery prevailed
when two Davis players tried to bring the puck past him for a fast break
scoring chance. Raftery stood his ground and overpowered the Davis
forwards for a quick puck steal and backhanded a shot over the stick of a
Davis defender and into the empty net for Woodland’s fourth and final
goal with less than a minute to play.
Team Manager Larry Martinez credited four Woodland
JV players, Captain Shayne Mueller, Asst. Captain Michael Witham, Adam
Pike and Markus Preciado for providing valuable energy to counter the
speed of the Davis Offense with regulars Miranda Van Atta, Michael McGrew
and Sal Hernandez missing due to conflicts, injury or illness. Coach Mark
Jones credited Goalie Craig Martinez for his outstanding play during the
season. Davis outshot Woodland 33 to 21.
The Varsity win came an hour after the Woodland JV
team captured the Junior Varsity title over Jesuit demonstrating the
dominance of the Woodland Hockey program in the Sacramento Valley region..

Woodland Hockey Captures JV
Championship

December 14,
2003. Capping a perfect
weekend, the Woodland JV’s demolished Bella Vista High School on
Saturday to make it to the championship game against Jesuit on Sunday at
the Davis Inline Skate Center. Knowing the last time these two teams met
it was Jesuit who prevailed by a 5-3 margin inspired Woodland Goalie Jesse
Schultz to have his best game of the season. Facing a team filled with
fast skaters and hard shooters, Schultz fought hard for perfection by not
allowing a goal until the last minute of the game which provided the
necessary spark the Woodland offense needed. In a very strong defensive
battle, Woodland forward Justin Gravance scored the only goal near the end
of the first period when he forced a turnover and led a breakout before
placing a top shelf wrist shot in for a goal.
The Woodland defense led by Asst. Captain Michael
Witham, Benjamin Leacox, Matt Witham, Markus Preciado, Ashley Raftery,
Sage Dahl and Brian Trott then proved they were up for the challenge by
disrupting the Jesuit offense’s repeated attacks to help keep them off
the scoreboard. Goaltender Schultz capped an impressive period with
multiple saves during that crucial period.
Captain Shayne Mueller working with forward Adam
Pike gave Woodland their second goal when he was able to recover a loose
puck and force it in even though a defender vainly tried to topple him.
With time winding down, Asst. Captain Witham forced a turnover and raced
ahead of the defender to score with a wrist shot. Jesuit scored their only
goal with 41 seconds remaining but it was too little, too late giving the
Woodland team their first Sacramento Valley High School JV League
Championship.

Woodland Hockey Captures
Invitational Thanksgiving Tournament Title
|
November 28, 2003. Facing an
invitation only field of elite teams, Woodland High School students
recovered from an opening 3-3 tie against Lathrop before bouncing back to
top Chico and Livermore High Schools to make it to the finals where they
faced off with bracket winner Davis High School. In the championship game,
Woodland prevailed with a hard fought 6-3 victory over their local league
rivals to capture the Thanksgiving High School Invitational title at the
Davis Inline Skate Center. "This team wins because, in addition to
great hockey skills, they play a smart team game," said Coach Mark
Jones. "Bringing Varsity and Junior Varsity players together for the
first time presented problems but the players adapted and overcame,"
added Manager Larry Martinez.
In their opening game, it was Lathrop that gained the upper hand with a
quick face off victory and one timer goal seconds into the contest.
Minutes later a Spencer Jones to David Morrison pass led to a one time
goal to tie the score. Lathrop answered with two more goals before Casey
Gagnon led Moises Abarca with a perfect pass to set up a goal to bring
Woodland within one. The Woodland defense led by Captain Shawn Raftery,
Asst. Captain Ken Martinez, Michael Witham and Gagnon kept Lathrop off the
scoreboard the remainder of the contest. Captain Raftery tied the score
with a top shelf wrist shot after breaking through the defensive line
which led to the draw.
Against Chico High School Raftery opened the scoring after taking an
Abarca pass. Chico roared back to score the games next three goals to take
a 3-1 lead into the half. Coaches then adjusted the Woodland lines
to better handle the match ups and the tactic proved successful. Gagnon
opened the second half with a score on a hard wrist shot. Abarca later
scored to tie the score after overpowering the defense to score with a
quick wrist shot. Raftery added his second goal after skating through the
defense and sliding in a five hole goal to give Woodland a one goal lead.
Abarca put the game out of reach when he forced in a rebounding loose puck
to give Woodland the 5-3 victory.
Against Livermore High School, Woodland followed goalie Craig Martinez’
shutout performance to a 5-0 victory. Martinez’ twin brother Ken gave
him the only goal he needed by scoring with a blocker-side wrist shot to
open the scoring. Minutes later Abarca scored on a backhanded shot.
Raftery then set up Morrison who scored on a nifty one timer. Witham
scored the last goal of the half on a hard slap shot to give Woodland a
commanding 4-0 lead. Witham scored the only goal of the second half after
an Abarca shot was partially blocked and he recovered the loose puck
before shooting over the goalie for the victory. Coaches credited the
efforts of newcomers Shayne Mueller and Adam Pike along with regulars
Michael McGrew, David Morrison and Spencer Jones for breaking up numerous
plays before they became a threat.
In the championship game, Woodland faced off against the Davis Blue
Devils who marched through their three games without a loss. Moises Abarca
began the scoring for Woodland just seconds into the game on a break a way
before propelling a wrist shot in for a goal. Captain Raftery then set up
Abarca who scored again just two minutes into the game. The Davis defense
then shut down the Woodland offense before Ivan Torres scored on a
breakaway to make the score 2-1 at the end of the half.
Raftery opened up the second half with his own goal after being
sandwiched by the defense and shooting a wrist shot past the goalie. Davis
quickly countered with goals by Kyle Biggs and David Holm to tie the
score. Speedster Abarca led another offensive charge and stroked a hard
wrist shot that was deflected by the Davis goalie when Michael McGrew
recovered the loose puck and scored the eventual game winner with a
perfectly placed wrist shot. Ken Martinez scored another Woodland goal
when he slipped in a shot near corner post after backing up the defense to
give Woodland a two-goal lead. With time winding down a deflected Woodland
shot careened off the Davis goalie and rolled out from his crease when
David Morrison scooped the loose puck away from and around the surprised
Davis goalie to score Woodland’s 6th goal.
The Thanksgiving day-after tournament, while not part of the Sacramento
Valley High School Sectional season, was a perfect tune-up for the
Sectional Tournament, which begins December 6th. The Woodland
Varsity team went 9-0-0 to win the top seed in the Sectional. Including
the Thanksgiving High School Invitational, the Varsity is undefeated in
high school play this year. The Wolves JV team is presently tied for the
league lead in Junior Varsity division going (7-2-0) in the regular
season. Fans can follow the team’s progress by logging into the web site

Woodland Hockey Defeats Napa
8-3 in Physical Match
Pictures

November 23, 2003.
Napa High School tried to physically overpower the undefeated Woodland
Hockey team in a penalty filled contest Sunday evening at the Davis Inline
Skate Center. The tactic however backfired as the Woodland High School
students followed Moises Abarca’s four goals and goalie Craig Martinez
to 8 to 3 victory.
Napa taking advantage of their superior numbers physically tried to
slow the high scoring Woodland players down. It was Michael McGrew who led
a fast break before backhanding a pass to Moises Abarca for Woodland’s
first goal. A minute later Abarca scored his second goal when he was
assisted by Miranda Van Atta with a puck steal and broke through the
defense with a nifty wrist shot. Napa countered with a goal during a
Woodland penalty to close within one as the first period ended. As
penalties were exchanged it was a deflected Napa shot that was controlled
by Asst Captain Ken Martinez who passed forward to David Morrison who
quickly passed across to Spencer Jones for a quick backhand shot passed
the goalie. Napa countered with a puck steal and break a way one timer to
close within one. Martinez later recovered a deflected shot and used a
spin move to propel a slap shot from the corner for another Woodland goal.
Abarca added another score on a break a way during a Woodland penalty to
increase their lead by a 5 – 2 margin.
The first of six Napa third period penalties led to three Woodland
power play goals. A Martinez to Casey Gagnon pass led to a slap shot
goal. Midway through the period a Van Atta to Abarca pass led to another
goal. Napa countered with a goal during a Woodland penalty to make the
score 7 –3. Woodland scored their eighth goal on a McGrew slap shot that
was deflected, recovered and forced in by McGrew on a good second effort.
Napa outshot Woodland by a 43 to 31 advantage.
Woodland will be seeded number one by virtue of its undefeated record
when the Sacramento Valley Section Tournament begins December 6th.
Woodland will be looking to repeat as the Section champions.
Woodland JV’s Win Davis Rematch
After last weeks nail biting one goal victory, Woodland JV hockey
players set out on a fast pace against Davis High School to score 8 goals
in the first two periods and cruised to a 9-4 victory at the Davis Inline
Skate Center. Captain Shayne Mueller, Asst. Captain Michael Witham, Markus
Preciado, Adam Pike, Sage Dahl and Benjamin Leacox all had two goals or
assists to lead the offense.
Woodland players scored 6 goals in the first period while the defense
led by Brian Trott, Matt Witham, Justin Gravance, Ashley Raftery, Preciado
and goalie Jesse Schultz kept Davis off the scoreboard.
Woodland added two more goals in the second period while Davis scored
midway through the period for a commanding 8 to 1 lead.
Davis made a valiant effort to get back into the game by scoring three
goals in the third period while Woodland added their ninth goal to cap off
the victory. Woodland outshot Davis by 33 to 23 advantage.

Casey Gagnon sparked the output when he
fed Martinez with a perfect cross pass that was slapped in midway through
the first period. Michael McGrew followed that goal with a hard slap shot
that bounced off the Oakridge goalie and was forced in by Raftery. Moises
Abarca followed a few minutes later with a break a way that he passed
through the defender for a Raftery wrist shot and goal. Spencer Jones then
teamed up on an assist with Martinez on a give and go. Speedsters Manuel
and Moises Abarca later broke past the Oakridge defense to team up for a
one timer. With only seconds remaining, Martinez led an offensive charge
before passing to David Morrison who backhanded the puck in to give
Woodland a 6 to 0 advantage.
The second period saw goals by Raftery
with an assist by McGrew and a Morrison goal with an assist by Jones to
increase Woodland’s lead 8-0.
The third period opened the floodgates

down, Morrison fed Jones who promptly forced the puck in for Woodland’s
13th goal.
JV Team
The Woodland Junior Varsity pulled out
a 6-5 victory over Davis High School in a seesaw battle Saturday evening

to score before Mueller intercepted a pass and broke away for his second
goal. Woodland led 4-1 at the end of the period.

to score two goals to bring them within one before Adam Pike led a
breakout and scored on a backhanded shot. Davis again scored before
Mueller set up Pike for his second goal. Davis scored with seconds
remaining in the second period to make the score 6-5.
Davis tied the score moments into the
period. Mid period Matt Witham led a break out through the defense before
passing to Mueller who lifted a top shelf wrist shot for the one goal
advantage. The Woodland defense led by goalie Jesse Schultz, Brian Trott,
Raftery, Dahl, Gravance and Leacox kept the Davis offense off the
scoreboard for the nail biting victory. |

November 9, 2003.
The Woodland Varsity Inline Hockey Team led by five goals from Captain
Shawn Raftery and another near shut out performance from goalie Craig
Martinez easily overpowered Oakridge High School in Sacramento.
The 9 to 1 victory was decided early with a fast
start by the Woodland offense.
WHS juniors Spencer Jones and David Morrison teamed
up to score the first goal with a fast break one timer. A minute later,
Asst Captain Ken Martinez teamed up with a pass to Captain Shawn Raftery
following a face off victory that he slid in under the goalie. Raftery
scored again midway through the period with a nifty puck steal and wrist
shot. Frustrated Oakridge players were called for penalties and Woodland
capitalized. Martinez set up Casey Gagnon who propelled a hard slap shot
past the goalie during a Woodland power play. A minute later Raftery again
used a spin move and wrist shot to slip another shot past the Oakridge
goalie. Oakridge countered with their only goal with a deflected slap shot
that bounced in making the score 5-1 as the period ended.
Woodland defensive leader Miranda Van Atta entered
the scoring frenzy with a hard slap shot from the corner midway through
the second period. Raftery added yet another goal with a puck steal
and breakaway charge before scoring with a wrist shot.

November 2, 2003.
Woodland High School Hockey players expected a physical game against the
Davis High School Blue Devils on their home rink Sunday afternoon and left
little doubt they were up to the challenge by pulling out a penalty filled
7 to 1 victory. Woodland remains undefeated in the Sacramento Valley High
School Roller Hockey League.
Woodland Captain Shawn Raftery led the offense with
a hat trick and Goalie Craig Martinez turned in a near perfect game by
stopping all but one shot during a Davis power play midway through the
third period to clinch the win.
Woodland gained the upper hand midway through the
first period when Miranda Van Atta passed to Raftery who placed a top
shelf wrist shot over the goalie. Forward Moises Abarca added a goal two
minutes later when he out muscled a Davis defenseman and fired off a wrist
shot. Woodland added a third goal when forward Michael McGrew fed Raftery
with a perfect pass from behind the net, which he slapped in.
Woodland forward Spencer Jones scored the lone goal
in the second period when he fought for position near the goalie and
Gagnon passed across with a perfect pass that Jones deflected in.
The third period saw Davis score their lone goal
during one of the many Woodland penalties when Byron Gee fed Chris Knight
who fired a knuckling slap shot that hit the post and deflected in.
Woodland depended heavily on their defense led by Captain Raftery, Asst.
Captain Ken Martinez, Casey Gagnon and VanAtta to break up numerous
scoring drives for the remainder of the game when five penalties led to
ten Woodland penalty minutes. The game remained 4-1 for much of the third
period until Gagnon stole the puck and led Abarca with a perfect pass that
he deflected in. Miranda VanAtta then set up two more scoring plays when
she fed Raftery with a pass for a one timer goal and later fed David
Morrison with a pass that the left hander lifted just beyond the goalie’s
reach for Woodland’s 7th goal. Davis outshot Woodland 33 to
21.
Woodland will face Oakridge High School next Sunday
in Sacramento.
JV Team
The surprising Woodland JV team easily reversed
their only loss of the season by handing the Oakridge JV team a 10 to 1

Schultz who led the team and was within three minutes of a perfect game
while his offense took control. Captain Shayne Mueller led the charge with
four goals, Asst. Captain Michael Witham contributed a hat trick, Adam
Pike two goals and Justin Gravance one goal. Sage Dahl, Benjamin Leacox,
Brian Trott, Matt Witham and Ashley Raftery all provided assists on
scoring drives. The defense led by Trott, Raftery, Dahl, Leacox and Matt
Witham kept Oakridge down to only 16 shots for the entire game.

Woodland Topples Davis Hockey
6-1
Pictures
|
October 26, 2003.
Woodland High School Hockey players turned the tables on the Davis High
School Blue Devils with a strong defensive effort to pull out a 6 to 1
victory Sunday afternoon at the Davis Inline Skate Center.
Woodland defensive leader Miranda Van Atta set the
tone early when she sacrificed her body by sliding across the floor to
block a Davis a scoring drive. That effort sparked the entire team while
Woodland goalie Craig Martinez turned in a near perfect game.
It was aggressive play that caused two Woodland
penalties in the first period that opened the door for Davis scoring
plays. Strong defensive efforts by Capt. Shawn Raftery, Asst. Capt. Ken
Martinez, Casey Gagnon, and Van Atta however kept Davis off the scoreboard
while Woodland speedster Moises Abarca scored the only goal of the period
when he stole the puck and fired off a wrist shot with seconds to go.
Woodland took control in the second period when
Abarca won a face off and passed the puck to Sal Hernandez who powered
past the defense to score with a wrist shot. Midway through the period it
was Hernandez again who intercepted a pass and broke away for a goal.
Just prior to the end of the second period, Abarca
scored again when he fired a hard slap shot that bounced back and again
fired in for a goal. Woodland offensive players, Spencer Jones, David
Morrison, Michael McGrew, Hernandez and Abarca succeeded in breaking up
numerous pass plays to again keep Davis off the scoreboard for the entire
second period.
Three minutes into the third period, the defensive
duo of Van Atta and Raftery teamed up on a switch into the offensive lanes
to score on a VanAtta to Raftery wrist shot. A Woodland penalty led to
Davis goal when Steve Lindley passed to Rich Newens for a one time power
play goal. Woodland answered when a Hernandez pass hit a breaking Gagnon
who fired off a five hole shot for their 6th goal. Another
Woodland penalty opened the door for the Davis offense but a strong
defensive effort and repeated saves by goalie Martinez kept the game under
control. Woodland outshot their hosts 27 to 21.
JV Team
The surprising Woodland JV team easily handled the
Bella Vista JV by a 10 to 1 margin Sunday afternoon in Davis. It was
Woodland goalie Jesse Schultz who was within grasp of a perfect game while
his offense took control. Justin Gravance led the offense with a hat trick
while Captain Shayne Mueller, Asst. Captain Michael Witham, Adam Pike and
Manuel Abarca each scored. Sage Dahl and Benjamin Leacox assisted on
scoring drives. The defense led by Matt Witham, Brian Trott and Ashley
Raftery kept Bella Vista down to only 18 shots for the entire game. |

October 19, 2003.
Woodland High School Hockey players had to overcome a valiant effort by a
motivated Davis Senior High School team to squeeze out a hard fought 8 to
6 victory at the Davis Inline Skate Center Sunday afternoon.
The Davis High School players armed with hot sticks
and skates caught the Woodland Defense out of position to open the scoring
on a Biron Gee to Steve Lindley one timer. Davis again scored when Richard
Newens stole a pass and broke away to score giving Davis a 2-0 lead.
Midway though the period, Woodland Captain Shawn Raftery caught the speedy
Sal Hernandez who's wrist shot found the back of the net. Seconds before
the period ended, Asst Capt. Ken Martinez fired off a slap shot that Davis
goalie Will Bowman deflected but the loose puck was hit in by Hernandez to
tie the score seconds before the period ended.
Woodland took their first lead when Hernandez caught
Moises Abarca with a perfect pass that was lifted over the goalie. Davis
tied the score when Lindley passed to Gee for a one-time goal. Davis again
scored when Drew Eggelston fed Ivan Torres behind the Woodland defense to
put Davis up 4-3. Woodland tied the score when Hernandez led a breakout
before passing to Casey Gagnon who forced a shot past the Davis goalie.
Davis again went on top when Newens fed workhorse Lindley for a goal.
Woodland answered with their own goal on a Manuel Abarca to Raftery one
timer to tie the score 5-5. Woodland pulled ahead on a David Morrison to
Martinez deflected shot. Davis evened the score on a Gee to Torres scoring
play to end the second period 6 to 6.
Woodland regained the lead when Hernandez caught
Moises Abarca with a perfect pass which was slapped in under the Davis
goalie. A minute later, Manuel Abarca fed Raftery on a give and go pass
play to give Woodland a 2-goal cushion. The Woodland defense led by

Woodland Hockey Edges Davis 6-3
Abarca Scores Hat Trick
Pictures
|
October 12, 2003.
Davis and Woodland Players knew before hand that both
sides would be ready for a tough battle that could go either way at the
Davis Inline Skate Center Sunday afternoon. It was Davis who was better
prepared and skated their way to a lead that forced the Woodland High
School players to play catch up for most of the contest.
Davis scored first when Bobby Fields assisted Robin
Knight who placed the one timer into the net. Woodland forward Moises
Abarca tied the score when he pushed in a deflected puck a minute later.
Davis took the lead when Brian Reiger set up Fields on a perfect pass
play. Woodland again tied the game when Casey Gagnon forced his way past
two defensemen to score on a back handed shot. The first period ended in a
2 – 2 tie.
The second period saw a defensive battle where
Woodland outshot their hosts but Davis Goalie, Gokulp Gurer stopped every
shot. It was Davis who scored the lone goal of the period on a beautiful
Fields to Knight scoring play to take the lead.
The final period again started off as a defensive
battle until Asst. Captain Ken Martinez fired off a hard slap shot that
deflected off the goalie before David Morrison fought for the loose puck
and lifted a wrist shot into the corner of the net to tie the game. Abarca
put Woodland on top when his speed skating skills helped him to fake one
defender and gain an advantage on the second defender before using a wrist
shot to give Woodland its first lead. A Woodland penalty highlighted the
defensive skills of Captain Shawn Raftery, Miranda Van Atta, Michael
McGrew Spencer Jones and Woodland goalie Craig Martinez as they stopped
all scoring drives during the crucial third period. Moises Abarca gave
Woodland another goal during the Davis power play when he intercepted a
pass and powered pass the Davis defense to score Woodland’s fifth goal.
With time winding down Davis pulled their goalie on a face off near the
Woodland net. Again Abarca won the face off and pushed the puck to Raftery
who fired the puck the length of the rink and into the empty net to give
Woodland the hard fought 6-3 victory. Woodland outshot their hosts 38 to
27.
JV Team
In a Saturday evening contest, the Woodland JV
Hockey team surprised Jesuit High School at American Hockey Arena by
pulling out a 5 to 3 victory.
Michael Witham teamed up on four assists to Shayne
Mueller for four goals while Mueller assisted Sage Dahl with Woodland’s
fifth goal. The Woodland defense led by Adam Pike, Matt Witham, Justin
Gravance, Brian Trott and Goalie Jesse Schultz shut down the Jesuit
offense for much of the contest. Schultz kept his team ahead by stopping
23 of 26 shots.

October
5, 2003. The Woodland Varsity Hockey
team powered past Napa High School by a 10 – 2 margin Sunday evening at
Sacramento’s American Hockey Arena.
Napa physically overpowered the
Woodland players with their size and numbers to score the only goal in the
first period with 50 seconds remaining to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second period Woodland
Captain Shawn Raftery led a breakout and split the defense before passing
across to Casey Gagnon who fired a perfect shot into the net. Gagnon added
another goal a minute later when he was able to skate by a defender and
set up a backhand shot passed a second defenseman and under the surprised
Napa goalie. Napa answered to tie the score two minutes later with a puck
steal and a deflected shot. Woodland then capitalized on Napa mistakes
that led to penalties by scoring the game’s next two goals. Raftery
displayed his nifty puck handling skills to beat the defense and scored on
a wrist shot. Asst. Captain Ken Martinez led a break out before passing to
Gagnon who again scored from the corner just before the 2nd
period ended with the score 4-2.
Goalie Craig Martinez then shut down
the Napa offense by not allowing another goal while his Woodland team
kicked their offense into high gear. Spencer Jones’ pass to Michael
McGrew set up a slap shot that was partially blocked and Gagnon pushed the
